In hydraulic engineering we simulate structures whose geometry we know to a few centimeters at best, yet most meshing tools treat the CAD surface as sacred. I think the priority is inverted: cell quality should be the constraint, geometric fidelity the residual. To test this, I built a mesh generator around it from scratch.

Meshing is often the most time-consuming part of a CFD project. I'm experimenting with embedded boundaries (EB): take the raw STL, drop it into a Cartesian grid, and let the solver cut the cells. The video shows a weir going from a raw STL to a running free-surface simulation without touching snappyHexMesh.

Back in 2022 I posted about Adaptive Mesh Refinement in OpenFOAM. Lately I've been exploring the other school of AMR: block-structured refinement. There is no meshing step at all: the domain is covered by nested levels of Cartesian grid patches; whole blocks appear and disappear as they track the flow.
